my in-depth analysis of the u.k. elections

heh. no, not really, but…right…here’s what i’ve got. u.k. electoral map on the left taken from here, via anatoly — genetic ancestry map on the right which appeared in this previous post. [click on image for LARGER view.]:

uk-electoral-map-2015-bbc

any patterns that match?

well, obviously, there’s the english vs. scottish divide — the two groups are genetically distinct-ish, and now they’re electorally very distinct. up in scotland, it’s funny that the orkney islanders didn’t follow the lead of most of the rest of scotland — they stuck to the lib dems rather than go with the scottish national party — and they are genetically their own little unique viking group. and they’ve been sticking to liberals or liberal democrats since 1950, thank you very much.

there’s also the english vs. welsh divide — the farther west you go in wales, where the population is more genetically welsh, the less they went for conservatives (like the english in england did). until you get to pembrokeshire, that is, where the population of “little england beyond wales” — which is genetically distinct-ish from the rest of the population in wales (see the upside-down yellow triangles labeled “s. pembrokeshire”) — voted conservative like the rest of the english.

northern ireland? northern ireland is its own story, which i hope you can figure out on your own.

ignoring london (’cause all sorts of people/s have moved to london, from all over the u.k. and the world), i find it very tempting to match the pattern of the labour regions — up in the northeast and northwest and in yorkshire and even southern wales — with the northumbrians, cumbrians, w yorkshire, and s pembrokeshire/welsh border populations on the genetic ancestry map. to be honest, though, the labour regions really match up much better with the former coal-mining/industrial regions of britain (as well as with several large contemporary urban areas, obviously — manchester, liverpool, newcastle, etc.):

uk-electoral-map-2015-bbc-coalfields

this coal-mining-labour pattern is even more pronounced if you look at the election results from 2010 and see the regions of scotland which voted in labour mps back then. the only outlier, really, is anglesey. dunno why they like labour so much. mind you, even though they won in anglesey, labour did get only 31% of the vote there this time ’round. plaid cymru (the welsh nationalist party) got 30%.

so, regional labour party voters = the descendants of miners/industrial workers? the ones that didn’t leave for greener pastures? maybe. and/or this pattern reflects the highland-lowland/tees-exe line divide in britain, and what we’re seeing is a divide between the more manorialized english of the lowlands versus the not-very-manorialized subpopulations of the highlands — and the fact that there was coal in the highland regions is just a coincidence. dunno!

from the bbc, the share of the vote won by the conservatives in each constituency:

uk-electoral-map-2015-conservatives 02

rural areas voted for the conservative party more than urban areas in england. in fact, the spread is fairly even right across the country, just like the even spread of the ethnic english on the genetic ancestry map above. this isn’t the case in either wales or scotland — or northern ireland for that matter. there’s more support for the conservatives in the welsh border regions, where greater numbers of english (including normans, of course) settled. in scotland, there’s greater support for the conservatives in the lowlands rather than in the highlands.

labour:

uk-electoral-map-2015-labour 02

again, most support in those former mining/industrial urbanized regions. plus london. (also: this. (~_^) )

ukip:

uk-electoral-map-2015-ukip 02

a fair amount of support quite evenly spread across england, wales, and even northern ireland. what’d they get? thirteen percent of the vote? less overall support in scotland. and not so much in london, of course. they only got one seat in parliament, though — an mp from clacton — ukip got 44% of the vote there. i dunno anything about clacton-on-sea, so you tell me why there. the party got 30% of the vote in rotherham, which makes plenty of sense. there’s a hotspot of ukip support up there judging by the map. there’s another hotspot to the east there — 34% of the vote went to ukip in the boston & skegness constituency. lot of eastern european immigrants in that area of the country. lot of locales along the thames estuary also with rather high support for ukip. just outside london (where there’s a lot of immigrants).

lib dems:

uk-electoral-map-2015-libdem 02

the orkney islanders, again. and quite a lot of support from the scottish highlanders! that was a surprise to me. and the northern lowlanders. is this some viking trend? and where is that in cumbria? westmorland and lonsdale? i dunno anything about that area of the country, except i hear they got a lot of lakes.

snp:

uk-electoral-map-2015-snp

quite a lot of support across the board in scotland. over 40% of the vote almost everywhere (38% in the orkneys & shetland). lower support in some of the border regions toward northumbria.

green party:

uk-electoral-map-2015-green party

generally low support everywhere, but fairly evenly spread (low) support. the people of dál riata aren’t interested, though. (~_^) more support in the south of england? maybe?

plaid cymru:

plaid cymru

again, more support for the welsh national party in the west where people are more welsh — except for in pembrokeshire where they’re not so welsh.

any other patterns?

Experimental evolution reveals hidden diversity in evolutionary pathways“Our findings show that parallel genetic evolution is strongly biased by constraints and we reveal the genetic bases. From such knowledge, and in instances where new phenotypes arise via gene activation, we suggest a set of principles: evolution proceeds firstly via pathways subject to negative regulation, then via promoter mutations and gene fusions, and finally via activation by intragenic gain-of-function mutations. These principles inform evolutionary forecasting and have relevance to interpreting the diverse array of mutations associated with clinically identical instances of disease in humans.”

response to scott alexander

scott has a post up — Five Case Studies On Politicization — in which he mentions the last post i wrote on rotherham, etc. — stop creating a climate of fear! i tried a couple of times to leave a comment there, but i keep getting an error message (“Not Acceptable!”), so since i’m absolutely lacking in patience, i’m just leaving my response here rather than to try and try again over there.

you might want to read scott’s whole post first. or at least section iii in which the gang-rape business is brought up. here’s my response:

@scott – “I have no doubt that her outrage is genuine. But I do have to wonder why she is outraged about this and not all of the other outrageous things in the world. And I do have to wonder whether the perfect fit between her own problems – trying to blog about race and genetics but getting flak from politically correct people – and the problems that made Rotherham so disastrous – which include police getting flak from politically correct people – are part of her sudden conversion to political activism.”

well, first of all, this wasn’t “sudden.” i’ve been writing about rotherham and the larger scandal of which it is a part since 2012. you’ve just missed it:

diversity über alles

secondly, why am i so particularly outraged about the pakistani gang-rape thing going on in britain (and very likely some other european countries — belgium for one)? i’m not sure — i’ve asked myself the same question. i think the reason is that it brings together multiple elements, each of which angers me on its own, but when added together absolutely enrages me. (i admit it — i become quite irrational when i think about rotherham, etc.) those elements are: the abuse of young children, ill-considered immigration policies, class “war” (or whatever you want to call it), and the seemingly willful ignorance of politically correct people. oh, and the lies told by the media, too, although that is sort-of a subset of political correctness really.

you might ask — in fact, you do — why don’t i get upset about other atrocities in the world. like, for example, FGM in sudan or egypt. well, while i do think that FGM is a terrible practice and people should stop it, i’m all for letting peoples decide how they want to conduct their affairs in their own countries. it’s no business of mine if in afghanistan or yanomamo society they marry girls off at age 12. it *is* my business when girls in the west are tortured — tortured — and pimped out by gangs of whomever. (you should know that i also lived not too far from rotherham for a handful of years, so i identify with the place and the people, as they say.)

however, and i think you may have missed this, the main target of my anger in that post was not the gang rapists or immigrants but the politically correct crowd, *specifically* the ones who scream RACIST!! at the drop of a hat. the social workers and police officers in rotherham were *very* clear on the fact that they held their tongues and did nothing out of fear of being labelled racists and, therefore, of losing their jobs. this is not a joke anymore. this is not a stupid argument on twitter or facebook where feathers might get ruffled, but everyone goes home pretty much unscathed. in this case, people got hurt. children got hurt. directly because of the climate of fear that politically correct idiots have created.

they need to know that they have blood on their hands this time. they need to start thinking about *exactly* what they’re achieving.

stop creating a climate of fear!

ok. listen up political correct people! if you’re someone who reflexively calls others “racists” or “neofascists” without first checking into whether or not they actually are, you need to STOP it, because you’re creating a climate of fear in which people are afraid to do their jobs.

and now i’m not talking about some academics sitting comfortably in their ivy towers, i’m talking about governmental agencies like THE POLICE and child welfare services. here’s where your pc moral posturing has gotten us today:

Revealed: How fear of being seen as racist stopped social workers saving up to 1,400 children from sexual exploitation at the hands of Asian men in just ONE TOWN

• Report found 1,400 children abused between 1997 and 2013 in Rotherham
• The figure is likely to be a conservative estimate of the true scale
• Victims terrorised with guns and doused in petrol and threatened with fire
• More than a third of the cases were already know to agencies
• Author of the report condemned ‘blatant’ failings by council’s leadership
Action blocked by political correctness as staff ‘feared appearing racist’
• Majority of victims described the perpetrators as ‘Asian’ men
• Leader of Rotherham Council has stepped down with immediate effect
• No council employees will receive disciplinary action, leaders state

don’t believe me? read the report from the independent investigator: Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Exploitation in Rotherham (1997 – 2013) [pdf].

read about how girls (and some boys) as young as ELEVEN, many of whom were in care(!), were repeatedly gang raped, doped up, pimped out, sold out, trafficked, abused, and tortured (at least one girl was branded, although that may not have been in rotherham) — and then read how all of that was IGNORED by the child welfare(!) staff and police BECAUSE THEY WERE AFRAID OF BEING LABELLED RACISTS AND OF LOSING THEIR JOBS.

and if you’ve EVER called somebody a racist just because they said something politically incorrect, then you’d better bloody well read this report, because THIS IS ON YOU! this is YOUR doing! this is where your scare tactics have gotten us: over 1400 vulnerable kids systematically abused because YOU feel uncomfortable when anybody brings up some “hate facts.”

“hate facts” like this:

i don’t know what you want to do with that information, but you had better not even THINK about calling me a racist for pointing it out. enough is enough!

rotherham, the town in northern england where all this abuse has happened, is just the tip of the iceberg. the same systematic “grooming” of young girls and boys is happening in many other towns and cities in britain — we know this — the independent investigator knows this. and the authorities in those places are ALSO ignoring the problem for fear of being called racists.

this is YOUR fault, politically correct people — and i don’t care if you’re on the left or the right. YOU enabled this abuse thanks to the climate of fear you’ve created. thousands of abused girls — some of them maybe dead — on YOUR head.

think on that.

rotten in rotherham

i’m still mad as h*ll about this. incensed is the word, although that doesn’t describe it by half.

and what’s really bothering me is that this scandal — the sexual abuse of underage white girls by pakistani men in rotherham, and the subsequent and presumably ongoing cover up of that abuse by politicians, the police and social services, and obviously now the media — doesn’t seem to be much of a scandal in the british media. the press over there seem more concerned with one girl who ran off with her school teacher (he’s white) than the hundreds (or potentially thousands) of abused girls who were overlooked by too many in authority whose job it was to help such girls. right now there’s something like 1250 stories about the runaway couple on google.co.uk news, whereas i count ca. 90 stories about the rotherham scandal. unbelievable.

so, here are some more details on the case, originally from the times uk [behind a paywall], but lifted from rotherham politics:

“Town where girls were betrayed — first by groomers, then by the police”

“More than 200 confidential documents seen by The Times offer damning evidence of an institutional failure to tackle an epidemic of organised sexual exploitation in Rotherham.

“Similar crime networks have flourished during the past ten years across the North and Midlands, from Bradford, Birmingham and Blackburn to Derby, Manchester and Rochdale.

“A common pattern was that the men turning the abuse of young teenage girls into a collective activity were predominantly from a small sub-section of British Pakistani society….

“As long ago as 1996, a social services investigation uncovered concerns that girls were being coerced into ‘child prostitution’ by a small group of men who regularly collected them from residential care homes. Two years later, 70 girls from the town were said to be involved.

“The findings led to a one-year, Home-Office funded research project on the ‘detection, investigation and prosecution of offenders involved in sexual exploitation in Rotherham’….

“The project’s report was never published. It included ten case studies, all of them white British girls, and found that the men linked to the majority of the girls were members of one Asian family‘. [“asian” here means south asian. – h.chick] …

“There was ‘a great deal of data concerning the activities of these men’ yet none was charged with any sex offence. The report was written ten years ago. It should have acted as a wake-up call but for the next seven years nothing changed….

“Groups of young and older men, most of Pakistani heritage but also Iraqi Kurds and Kosovans, were operating in different areas of the town, known to police and social services yet seemingly immune from prosecution….

“A few miles away in Sheffield, South Yorkshire Police launched an investigation in 2007 into a network of Iraqi men aged 20 to 45 who were targeting girls in residential care. The youngest victim was 12. Convictions, prison sentences and deportations followed. [as they should have! – h.chick] An internal police report noted: ‘The offenders were well organised. Girls were approached and groomed by the men, coming to think of them as boyfriends.

“‘Once relationships were cemented, the situation changed. The offenders used violence to control the girls, who were then trafficked around the country, forced to have sex with other Iraqi men and used as prostitutes….’

“A July 2010 independent review for Rotherham’s safeguarding children board, which was not made public, described the Operation Central offences as ‘child exploitation at the top end of seriousness….’

It was a hard-hitting report in all but one respect. Issues of ethnicity and culture remained taboo.

‘Although the alleged perpetrators are of Asian origin and the victims are white, this is the factuality of these cases alone; nothing more can be drawn from that. It is imperative that suggestions/allusions of a wider cultural phenomenon are avoided. These assertions are without foundation.’ In reality, ten years of case files and intelligence reports had built the most solid of foundations for such an assertion.

“Within six months, a confidential internal report from South Yorkshire Police’s intelligence bureau, Child Sexual Exploitation — A strategic Problem Profile, gave further evidence of an escalating crisis….

“As of late 2010, up to 300 children were actively being sexually exploited in the country. Because most suffered ‘multiple criminal offences’, the force was ‘in all likelihood looking at the number of offences resulting from CSE [child sexual exploitation] reaching the thousands each year’….

“On the thorny issue of ethnicity, the report’s message was stark. ‘Practitioners throughout the force state there is a problem with networks of Asian offenders both locally and nationally. This was particularly stressed in Sheffield, and even more so in Rotherham where there appears to be a significant problem with networks of Asian males exploiting young white females. Doncaster reported a similar problem with Iraqi Kurd offenders, as did Sheffield.’

“Victims were ‘almost exclusively white or black’, with ‘very few’ Asian girls identified. ‘Work should be undertaken to explore why Asian and Iraqi males are over-represented as offenders,’ the report recommended.”
_____

some examples of the abuse and the lack of help by the authorities:

“Police went to a house outside which a father was demanding the release of his daughter, who was inside with a group of British Pakistani adults. Officers found the girl, 14, who had been drugged, under a bed. The father and his daughter were arrested for racial harassment and assault respectively. Police left, leaving three men at the house with two more girls….

“One young girl was doused in petrol as a threat against reporting sexual offences….

“Girls in Leeds also know the main perpetrators. They start grooming girls as young as 12 and are pimping them by age 13 or 14. Rape, multiple rapes and gang rape are often part of the grooming process. They have been operating for years. People in the community are too frightened to speak out. They do not talk about them within their own cultural community….

“One girl, 15, spent days in hospital after a broken bottle was allegedly forced inside her by two young British Pakistani men in a park, causing her to bleed extensively…..

“A 13-year-old girl was found at 3am with disrupted clothing in a house with a large group of Asian men who had fed her vodka. A neighbour reported the girl’s screams. Police arrested the child for being drunk and disorderly but did not question the men….

“A specialist project’s intelligence report for police identified 61 girls — 59 white, two Asian — linked to sexual exploitation by three brothers from another British Pakistani family. It named 41 associates of the brothers who allegedly used girls for sex….

“[O]ne young white girl, known by social services to have been sexually abused by Asian men from the age of 12, was offered language lessons in Urdu and Punjabi by Rotherham council. The aim was ‘to engage’ her in education….”

*update below*

and to h*ll with the kids (apparently).

from the times uk via rotherham politics:

“Confidential papers show a decade of abuse in South Yorkshire”

“Confidential police reports and intelligence files that reveal a hidden truth about the sale and extensive use of English children for sex are exposed today.

“They show that for more than a decade organised groups of men were able to groom, pimp and traffic girls across the country with virtual impunity. Offenders were identified to police but not prosecuted.

“A child welfare expert, speaking under condition of anonymity, said that agencies’ reluctance to tackle such street-grooming networks was ‘the biggest child protection scandal of our time’.

“The Times has published several articles about a pattern of crimes across northern England and the Midlands involving groups of men, largely of Pakistani heritage, and the sexual abuse of white girls aged from 12 to 16.

“We can now reveal evidence from more than 200 restricted-access documents, which show that, in one area, police and child protection agencies have held extensive knowledge of this crime model for ten years, yet have never publicly acknowledged its existence.

“The internal police and social service correspondence, research papers, intelligence reports and case files are a detailed history of alleged child sexual exploitation in South Yorkshire since 2000, focusing on Rotherham. They include a confidential 2010 report by the police intelligence bureaus warning that thousands of such crimes were committed in the country each year.

“It contains explosive details about the men responsible for the most serious, co-ordinated abuse. ‘Possibly the most shocking threat is the existence of substantial and organised offender networks that groom and exploit victims on a worrying scale,’ the report says. ‘Practitioners throughout the force state there is a problem with networks of Asian offenders both locally and nationally. This was particularly stressed in Sheffield and even more so in Rotherham, where there appears to be a significant problem with networks of Asian males exploiting young white females.’ Such groups are said to have trafficked South Yorkshire child victims ‘to many other cities, including Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, Bradford and Dover’.

Another confidential 2000 report, for the Rotherham Safeguarding Children Board, noted that such crimes had ‘cultural characteristics … which are locally sensitive in terms of diversity’.

It said: ‘There are sensitivities of ethnicity with potential to endanger the harmony of community relationships. Great care will be taken in drafting … this report to ensure that its findings embrace Rotherham’s qualities of diversity. It is imperative that suggestions of a wider cultural phenomenon are avoided.'”

i think i’m going to be sick.
