Many of the people in Brittany derive from the British aristocrats and city dwellers (celts) who fled England shortly after the Saxon invasion in about 450 CE. Brittany is to England what Bali was to the Hindu priest and artisan classes of central Java following the Muslim invasion of Java–a redoubt or last stand.
Hence the expression “Great Britain” = “Grand Bretagne” = “Britannia Major”, to distinguish it from “Brittany” = “Bretagne” = “Britannia Minor”.
