new commenting policy

i’ve been getting a lot of spam comments lately — a LOT — that aren’t being picked up by the spam filter.

i might’ve just lived with having to delete them, but they’re pr0n spam — and they’re not just any pr0n spam, but they’re “little lolita” pr0n spam, and that’s just … disgusting.

so i’ve changed the commenting policy so that:

“Comment author must have a previously approved comment.”

don’t know if this means that i’ve now got to approve the next comment from each of you regulars or not. so if your comment doesn’t appear immediately, you’ll know what’s happened … and i’ll approve it asap!

sorry ’bout that.

  1. So all of us regular commenters ought to use this thread to post pointless non-comments so that you can approve us and in the future we won’t have to wait.

well, your comment actually went through without me having to approve it, so either: 1) the system recognizes you as already having an approved comment(s), or 2) the system is total cr*p and doesn’t work at all. (~_^)

i shall have to see if i can figure out which one it is. hmmmm…..

edit: i think it’s working and recognizes you regulars (unless you show up here with a new/different ip).

  6. I don’t know that I’ve commented here before, but since you’re using wordpress, how are you getting spam? It catches nearly all of mine. However, I’ve had it set up as “approve first time commenter” forever.

yeah, i dunno! wp (akismet) was always really good before, but suddenly over the last couple of weeks i’ve been getting all this pr0n spam — probably from the same place (’cause the format of the message is the same), but the ip address keeps changing. ugh.

i’ve always had comments completely open, but now i guess i have to go with the “approve first time” to try to block this spam. seems to be doing the trick … so far.

  8. Huh, considering all the discussion of inbreeding here, you’d think a Russian automated spambot running off of zombies would chose another, far more germane, creepy fetish.

  10. ‘Genuine’ spam tends to be viagra or get rich quick. IMO it might be (proly is) a deliberate attempt to disrupt the site by someone with pretty formidable skills. If so, you can expect them to now send zillions of spam for you to moderate. Or gradually infiltrate the advocacy of violence or the N-word into comments.
