Genetic Variants Linked to Educational Attainment“A multi-national team of researchers has identified genetic markers that predict educational attainment by pooling data from more than 125,000 individuals in the United States, Australia, and 13 western European countries…. Combining the two million examined SNPs, the SSGAC researchers were able to explain about 2 percent of the variation in educational attainment across individuals, and anticipate that this figure will rise as larger samples become available.” – h/t friendly e-mailer! Deforestation Plants the Seed for Rapid Evolution in Brazil“The deforestation of the Brazilian rain forest has created a hidden consequence: The seeds of palm trees have evolved rapidly to be smaller.”

Gene switches make prairie voles fall in love“Researchers have shown for the first time that the act of mating induces permanent chemical modifications in the chromosomes, affecting the expression of genes that regulate sexual and monogamous behaviour.” – epigenetic effects!

Genetic structure and different population strata in Italy“‘Our results show that the Y-chromosomal genetic diversity of Italy is not clinal but structured in three geographical areas: North-Western Italy (NWI), South-Eastern Italy (SEI) and Sardinia (SAR). …suggesting a shared genetic background between Southern Italy and the Adriatic coast from one side, and between Northern Italy and Tuscany from the other side.'” – from dienekes!

Apes Regret Bad Decisions, Throw Tantrums“When apes make a bad decision or took a gamble that doesn’t pay off, they bang on tables and perform other kinds of tantrum-like behaviors, often exhibiting regret by attempting to undo what they had done.”

How Birds and Babies Learn to Talk

GSS on Haidt’s Moral Foundations theory“The GSS results largely support Haidt’s divisions, with liberals putting greater emphasis on liberty/oppression and especially care/harm, just as he found to be the case. Conservatives, on the other hand, are more concerned with fairness/cheating, authority/subversion, sanctity/degradation, and loyalty/subversion than liberals are.” – from the awesome epigone!

Homosexuality is natural. Fine. But what if homophobia is natural, too?

The Ugly Truth About Obesity“So yes, the obese group is not unlike its negative stereotypes. Of the, ‘lazy’, ‘sloppy’, ‘less competent’, ‘lacking in self-discipline’, ‘disagreeable’, ‘less conscientious’, ‘poor role models’, ‘unintelligent’, ‘unsuccessful’, ‘weak-willed’, ‘unpleasant’, ‘overindulgent’, it seems ‘disagreeable’ and ‘unpleasant’ are the only clear misses. This is not to hate on the obese, but to call a spade a spade.” – from staffan!

The big fat truth“More and more studies show that being overweight does not always shorten life — but some public-health researchers would rather not talk about them.”

What Science Says About Arousal During Rape

Breeding the Nutrition Out of Our Food“Studies published within the past 15 years show that much of our produce is relatively low in phytonutrients, which are the compounds with the potential to reduce the risk of four of our modern scourges: cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and dementia. The loss of these beneficial nutrients did not begin 50 or 100 years ago, as many assume. Unwittingly, we have been stripping phytonutrients from our diet since we stopped foraging for wild plants some 10,000 years ago and became farmers.”

  1. “i’ve snorkeled with the manatees! (^_^)”

That must have been an experience!

I’ve came across a large sea turtle snorkeling once. Looked around and there it was. The thing seemed like it came out of nowhere!

  2. The arousal-during-rape article isn’t exactly news. My girlfriend in the early 80s was an ICU nurse and she attended a professional seminar on rape where arousal as a protective reflex and occasional orgasm were discussed.

  3. The discussion in and on the “overweight” paper is remarkable for missing the main lesson of the graphs – how dangerous it is for older peole to be underweight.

  4. @jayman – “I’ve came across a large sea turtle snorkeling once.”

cool! (^_^) have never run into one of those guys in the wild.

you should really try snorkelling with the manatees sometime (lots of opportunities in florida to do so — in a managed sort of way where they’re not disturbed)! they’re such a bunch of big, loveable lugs who think it’s great that, for some strange reason, these humans show up every morning to give them a belly rub. (^_^)

    1. @hbd chick ” bunch of big, loveable lugs who think it’s great that, for some strange reason, these humans show up every morning to give them a belly rub” Hmm. So you like big fat harmless lugs who like belly rubs … let me think about that one.

  5. This article might be right up your alley.

College in Sweden is free but students still have a ton of debt. How can that be?

Why do I think you might find this interesting?

Swedes, like other Nordic Europeans, have an independent streak. They leave their parental homes earlier than almost all their southern neighbors.

One study found that just 2% of Swedish men lived with their parents after the age of 30. In Spain, a quarter of 30-year-old men still are shacking up with mom and dad; in Italy it was around 32%.

Nobody’s exactly sure why this is.

  6. @tangoman – “‘One study found that just 2% of Swedish men lived with their parents after the age of 30.'”

ah ha! yes, very interesting. thanks! (^_^)

  7. Chick,
Chuck seems to be saying that Ron Unz was right all along vis a vis his theory of soft-hereditarianism of intelligence (though wrong on the Chinese being shaped by their historic meritocracy). May be I’m wrong, but he didn’t seem to hedge, just kind of buried the lede.
Do you endorse this? That’s quite a stunning admission on Chuck’s part and I think I’ve read him correctly…

  8. @dahlia – “Do you endorse this?”

no, but i remain agnostic about pretty much everything that chuck’s written — it’s so much and so dense (not that there’s anything wrong with that!), that i just haven’t devoted the time to read closely what he’s had to say about race differences in iq, etc., etc.

i really don’t follow the iq debates all that closely, i’m so preoccupied here in my own little world with questions about altruism and family/societal relationships and so on. (~_^)

  9. @the linked Occidentalist article – At first I was impressed with Chuck’s use of a PCA to check out physical trait differences in the USA groups, and thus determine how much, if any ethnic structure existed in the USA. How novel! How ingenious!

Then I simulated the mind of an average American person…

“So, like, how do you know you have Italian ancestry again?

Duh, check out my olive skin!”

That is, physical trait differences may correlate with estimated group membership because Americans use physical trait differences to decide what group they are part of, rather than because their self assigned group matches ancestry and ancestry happens to match physical traits.

  10. “Rooinek 06/02/2013 at 9:26 PM”

NOT the same person as “van Rooinek” of manosphere infamy.
Just in case anyone confused us.

  11. Oh, there is another Rooinek! Sorry I am new around here.

I have a microscopic amount of Afrikaner blood from a 7*great grandmother. My neck burns red in the sun so inevitably on my first visit to South Africa several people told me I am a rooinek or redneck.

They also told me the meaning of soutpiel. A soutpiel or salt penis is a South African with one foot in Africa and one foot overseas … and his penis dangling in the ocean. I will see if I can figure out how to change my nickname to soutie.

Speaking of Afrikaans, I amused myself one evening in a pub asking the barmaid to help me learn the language by telling me some nouns. I would say innocently, “how do you say “dog”? “Hond”? “Okay. So if I want to say your mother’s dog I say, ‘jou ma se hond'”?

This followed by gasps of, “you can’t say that”!!!

“Oh. I am sorry. Well then how do you say ‘house’ ” …

    Infantile stuff, I know.
