lego is so waaaycist!

star wars prolly is, too, i guess:

“Lego Racism? Muslim Turks complain about Jabba the Hut”

“Lego racism? Turks in Austria say Lego’s Jabba’s Palace set looks like a mosque. And Lego’s Star Wars villian Jabba the Hut perpetuates racism and prejudice toward Muslims among children who play with Legos.

“Some Turks in Austria have lodged a formal complaint over Lego’s Jabba’s Palace set, saying Lego is encouraging racial prejudice and perpetuating negative images of Muslims.

“The problem, apparently, is that the Jabba the Hut Lego palace looks like a mosque. And not just any mosque, but Istanbul’s great Hagia Sophia, and another mosque in Beirut, Jami al-Kabir….”

jabba-palace-lego

heh. they do kinda look alike! (^_^)

but that’s not the point! the point is that people have to stop reacting to EVERYthing as waaaycist. it’s just stooopid now.

and i won’t even mention the fact that, even if lego was purposefully poking fun at mosques and islam — which it is NOT — that could hardly be RACE-ist now, could it? — since islam, being a RELIGION is NOT a RACE.

honestly.

(note: comments do not require an email. ’cause that would prolly be waaaycist, too.)

  1. Their complaint is rendered even more trivial by the fact that the only parts of the Hagia Sophia that was built by the Turks were the minarets. The rest was built during the reign of Justinian in the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire.

it really is a silly complaint, isn’t it?

how silly do you (or anybody out there) think political correctness can get? i mean, what will “the top” look like — before it all comes crashing down? how ridiculous can humans be?

  3. @hbd chick “what will “the top” look like — before it all comes crashing down?” That should by rights be an eminently reasonable question. Things move in cycles, right? I mean if it were really possible for absolute political correctness to become and remain the norm for everybody, then it should have happened long ago. So it’s impossible for that to happen. So things must change and a maximum is a reasonable assumption.

But with my usual ill concealed modesty about my own opinion, political correctness is the flip side to the prejudice against marrying kin. That may be evolution’s way of saying, “All right. You’ve done it now. You’ve gone too many generations without marrying kin so I’m pullling the plug on your fertility and just to make sure there’s no mistake I’m giving you an instinctive phobia against marrying kin.” In that case, and I hope it’s not true, then political correctness is part of the process that is eliminating us. I just read that the number of people of working age in China is falling and in the European Union as well.
Asking when it will peak is like being in an electric chair and asking when they were planning to turn off the current. It will be turned off when it has done its job.
Just thought I’d cheer everybody up.

  4. The point isn’t whether this is an intentional slight to Islam or not…or even a ridiculous complaint. The point is to let the world know that Islam will not be fucked with. Ridiculous Christian countries are not to question whether the complaint is ridiculous or not, only ask how high to jump.

oh, well, i’m sorry for being so insolent! (heh. no, not really. (~_^) )

  6. Such nonsense…they better leave Lego alone! (We’re in deep trouble if this complaint gains any traction…)
Aside: I freakin’ grew up with Legos (though I’ve regrettably lost most of them)…

  10. Muslims get offended by EVERYTHING. They seem to be in a perpetual state of outrage. Must be something to do with their “honour/shame” culture.

  11. As noted in another blog, the proper response to the complainers was “You didn’t build that”.

Soxy – you can look it up, but as I recall, from posts on Dienekes, the people of Turkey are a mixture of Greeks and Armenians, with about 10% Central Asian (Turkic) admixture. The Greek element predominates in the west, the Armenian in the east, and mixes in the middle. Given how populated Asia Minor was at the time of the Turkic invasion, rising to 10% of the population is pretty impressive.

well, they don’t have a sense of humor. no, really — they don’t. (i think you may be right — that this has to do with their honor/shame culture. hmmm….)

    1. @hbd chick “well, they don’t have a sense of humor” Probably you are right, but I’m not sure. I used to think, “I miss the Russians as boogymen. At least they had a sense of humor.” But then some insurgent leader in Yemen offered seven camels to anyone who would bring our fearless leader’s head to him. And he went on, “And seven chickens for the hag,” referring to our renouned secretary of state. I honestly thought he was kidding. Even if he was, though, it seems rare.

no, i don’t know, either! those creative types behind star wars just had some very, very active imaginations, i guess. (~_^)

dunno. whole page about it on wikipedia, though! and, like anthony said, i’m sure there’s a lot about the question on dienekes as well. (^_^)
