extreme altruism

i can tell you right now, i don’t have half the number of whatever type of altruism genes this girl has (i still have both my kidneys). if anything, i’d guess i have more “sib altruism” genes than anything else:

“South Florida woman receives kidney transplant from stranger after posting ad on Craigslist”

“A search that began on Craigslist.org has led Selina Hodge to a Miami operating room.

“Hodge, 28, posted a plea online in July, looking for someone — anyone — to donate a kidney.

“‘That’s when I turned to Craigslist, because I didn’t know where else to turn to,’ Hodge said, adding that the first few responses arrived this summer.

“Hodge received more than 800 responses from around the world — one of which came from a woman who lives just miles away from her Palm Beach Gardens home.

“‘It just amazes me that somebody would actually lay down their life for a complete stranger,” said Gina Evans, Hodge’s mother.

Stephanie Grant, 23, was the person who saw Hodge’s story on the news and decided to step in to help….”

if you stop and think about it for a minute, it really is very, very extraordinary — to give a stranger — a person to whom stephanie’s probably not related — an organ? that’s some serious altruism genes at play there. i am impressed.

and 800 responses? who are all these people?! so many altruists in the world! just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, doesn’t it? (^_^)

i’m pretty sure i’d give a family member a kidney if they needed it — maybe even a very good friend — but not a stranger. they can have my organs when i’m dead, but until then, i need them. (~_^)

  1. I wonder how many of those 800 were women.

Also, you didn’t note that the ladies are of two different races! (Hodge is black)

isn’t there a much greater chance of rejection with that? it would suck to gift a kidney and it didn’t even work.

that would p*ss me off to no end!

i knew a guy once who needed a kidney — diabetic alcoholic. nice guy, basically, but he just couldn’t stop drinking.

one of his sisters gave him a kidney.

he never stopped drinking and eventually died a couple of years later (in his 40s).

even though i knew her pretty well, i can’t even begin to imagine how his sister felt.

  5. Sorry upfront – ‘cept I don’t know how to do Craig’slist.

White Arkie, 55 and no discenable beerbelly needing a good pair of Converse wading sneakers. Size 7 ½ used somewhat, okay. Promises to treat minnows as well as any minnow would expect to be treated. Promises any donated minnows the absoluted finest introduction to the neighboring bass as ever a minnow could ask. Probably better than any minnow could be capable of versing to a Hallmark card versing judge.

And while on the topic of judge….. ment.

  6. I have been thinking about this lately, and, at first glance, it seems to be that this concern for obvious non-kin (as people of different races certainly are) may be a distinctive feature of Germanic Whites. Other peoples can be quite altruistic to their own people, (sometimes, anyway [warning: graphic video]), but concern for others not even of your own race seems to me to be less common around the world.

I’m not in a position to be exhaustively familiar with this, but how common are charities directed outside the homeland in the non-Western world? One would expect that people are more inclined to help others once their own needs have been met, so I would only expect charities to be mostly in the developed world. I wonder what would happened if you looked at charitable contributions to international charities (to say the developing world, like Africa), controlling for GDP per capita, particularly comparing the Western European countries and the British expatriate countries with the Eastern European and East Asian ones.

If Western Europeans are indeed that altruistic that would explain things like “White guilt” over the abuses of Europeans towards other groups in the past and the much lamented (on HBD blogs) failure of Whites to look out for their own racial interests. Of course, if this is true, that would certainly be a good thing, considering the position that White countries are to exploit the rest of the world…

i think that sounds like a fair assessment to me. especially historically speaking (i mean the recent past, like the nineteenth century and early twentieth century). maybe some groups like the japanese and south koreans today are also quite concerned about other peoples as well? i’m not sure, but maybe.

yeah, this is probably exactly right. you couldn’t possibly compare charitable donations from germany with those from uganda — just wouldn’t work. but you might be able to do so across the developed world. i suppose one could look at monies given to third world nations on a national level, i.e. as given via governments. ??

    absolutely!

perhaps. but at some point, you can have too much of a good thing.
