Lyme bacteria show that evolvability is evolvable“Natural selection favours those with a greater capacity to generate genetic variation.”

50,000 generations of bacteria prove that evolution never stops“[C]omputer models have shown that animals can still experience significant evolutionary changes over time, even in the absence of selectional pressures. Traits like evolvability, or evolutionary potential. Indeed, the Lenski study shows that the same holds true when working with organisms in evolutionary ‘real time.’ The researchers, who performed a comparative analyses of the bacteria after every 500 generations, showed that E. coli will continue to evolve towards increasing replicative efficiency.” – h/t peter turchin! – see also Krazy Kats from greg cochran.

Neanderthal virus DNA spotted hiding in modern humans“The DNA of ancient viruses first spotted in the Neanderthal genome have now been identified in modern humans…. [The researchers] examined the genomes of 67 people with cancer, and found they each contained seven of the sequences supposedly unique to the ancient humans.”

How Our Minds Went Viral“Based on this research, the scientists propose a scenario. Our ancestors millions of years ago were infected with a virus. Eventually it became lodged in our genome. At some point, a mutation moved the virus enhancer next to the PRODH gene. Further mutations allowed it to helped boost the gene’s activity in certain areas of the brain, such as the hippocampus…. Perhaps our minds are partly the way they are today thanks to an infection our ancestors got a few millions of years ago.” – h/t john durant!

Reconstructing the Population Genetic History of the Caribbean“‘We find evidence of two pulses of African migration. The first pulse—which today is reflected by shorter, older ancestry tracts—consists of a genetic component more similar to coastal West African regions involved in early stages of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The second pulse—reflected by longer, younger tracts—is more similar to present-day West-Central African populations, supporting historical records of later transatlantic deportation. Surprisingly, we also identify a Latino-specific European component that has significantly diverged from its parental Iberian source populations, presumably as a result of small European founder population size. We demonstrate that the ancestral components in admixed genomes can be traced back to distinct sub-continental source populations with far greater resolution than previously thought, even when limited pre-Columbian Caribbean haplotypes have survived.'” – @dienekes’.

The Paradox of Diverse Communities“Their simulations of more than 20 million virtual ‘neighborhoods’ demonstrate a troubling paradox: that community and diversity may be fundamentally incompatible goals…. After 20 million-plus simulations, the authors found that the same basic answer kept coming back: The more diverse or integrated a neighborhood is, the less socially cohesive it becomes, while the more homogenous or segregated it is, the more socially cohesive…. [T]he models demonstrated that it was impossible to simultaneously foster diversity and cohesion ‘in all reasonably likely worlds.’ In fact, the trends are so strong that no effective social policy could combat them, according to Neal. As he put it in a statement, ‘In essence, when it comes to neighborhood desegregation and social cohesion, you can’t have your cake and eat it too.'” – see also original research article: The (In)compatibility of Diversity and Sense of Community [pdf]. – h/t nearly everybody on twitter!

War’s Enduring Effects on the Development of Egalitarian Motivations and In-Group Biases“[G]reater exposure to war created a lasting increase in people’s egalitarian motivations toward their in-group, but not their out-groups, during a developmental window starting in middle childhood (around 7 years of age) and ending in early adulthood (around 20 years of age). Outside this window, war had no measurable impact on social motivations in young children and had only muted effects on the motivations of older adults.” – h/t t.greer!

jared diamond has a new book out: The World Until Yesterday: What Can We Learn from Traditional Societies?

it gets a very favorable review in the guardian. here’s a taste of what’s in it:

“Diamond has studied traditional societies in Africa, Asia, South and North America and the Arctic, but most of his analysis comes from his observations of his old scientific stamping grounds in New Guinea, a process that has not been without its tribulations. Several years ago, Diamond met a tribesman called Daniel Wemp who said he had organised a clan war in New Guinea to avenge the death of an uncle….

“The issue of vengeance is central to Diamond’s book. In the west, when a person is robbed or injured in an attack, the state – in the form of the police – take responsibility for tracking and punishing the culprit. Traditional societies take a very different approach. Minor offences are normally settled by payment of compensation – the pig is the traditional currency in New Guinea – or by holding a feast to signal the re-establishment of friendly relations. For more serious offences, including murder, a family will seek to make alliances with others to help track down and kill their relative’s murderer. This usually triggers an identical response from the murdered murderer’s family and the process is repeated. The west’s depersonalised system of justice looks a lot better from this perspective.”

well, looks like i’m gonna have to buy the book. d*mn! (~_^)

via altright, a “music video” from a comedy show called ‘grotesco‘ which airs on svt (sweden’s television):

i don’t really get the joke. ?? and i don’t mean that ’cause i don’t like miscegenation (see below). i mean that i really don’t get what’s (supposed to be) funny about this vid. are they making fun of rappers or neo-nazis or what? i don’t find it funny, but then again i don’t associate sveeeedish people with brilliant stand-up comedy routines, so maybe it’s not just me.

what i do think is funny is this vid/skit seems to represent more left-wing eugenic sentiments, which is the LAST thing that the looney left would EVER want to be associated with. eugenics=bad. really bad. the mostest. evilest. EVEH!

the song’s lyrics suggest that sveeeedish people (and others, too, to be fair) should all “blanda upp” with non-sveeeedes. “blanda upp” has been translated into engrish as “mix up.” yeah, well, kinda-sorta. i dunno about you, but i can hear the cognate there: blanda? blend?

on checking google, i find that the sveeeedish verb “blanda” does, indeed, mean mix; but it also means blend, admix and hybridize. oh yeah.

i can’t help but think that the looney sveeeedish left doesn’t only think that different peoples in sveeeeden ought to f*ck each other, but that they ought to have babies with each other, too. the sveeeedish looney left — and my impression is the looney left everywhere — seems to wish for an all café con leche world (remember how they all swooned over the chosen one!):

which is funny ’cause i thought race was just a social construct, so why should it matter? but, instinctively, and unbeknownst to themselves, the looney left has hit on the solution to all the ethnic|racial strife in the world — elminate ethnies|races! just get rid of those d*mned ethnic genetic interests once and for all. blanda upp!

and that would prolly do it.

but it would never work, of course. for f*ck’s sake, there’s 6.5+ BILLION people in the world right now. how u gonna blanda upp all those people?! and you’d have to do it every single generation. fuheveh! commenter garland over @altright gets it:

“It [race mixing] just creates new races. That is, “diversity” doesnt spread evenly outward like a universal solvent. The breeding will still form some sort of genetic cluster. You’ll just end up with more balkanization or at least more complex layers of racial strife, eg the mulatto resentment on top of black-white strife.”

exactly.

i, personally, don’t care who anyone decides to mate with. black, white, asian, mexican. gay, straight. h*ll, i don’t even care if u wanna marry your favorite anime character.

i am annoyed, tho, that in our pc world it’s become next to impossible for people to make informed choices in their selection of mate. people ought to know about human biodiversity when they’re looking around for someone to reproduce with. it’s a major decision in life — it’s THE decision for chrissakes! people need to know what they’re dealing with.

for instance. suppose you chicks out there wanna guarantee as best you can that you get a monogamous partner. well, one thing (amongst many) that might be important to know is that african men (on average) have larger testicles than whites who (on average) have larger testicles than asian men. (thx, jared diamond!) and in primates (that’s us, btw), those with the bigger balls are more polygamous (gorilla chimp [thnx, rob!] males, who generally have large family jewels, keep harems; gibbons, not so well endowed, are monogamous).

so, if u took a random asian dude, a random white, and a random black, chances are that the asian dude would be the most monogamous, then the white guy, then the black. that ain’t guaranteed, of course. but odds are. just sayin’.

obviously this is not the only thing any random girl ought to be thinking about when choosing a mate. it’s just meant to be one example of what my ideal world would look like. people would be informed about biology to the fullest extent possible, and then they could act from there.

well, i can dream, can’t i?

one last thing about the sveeeedish video. man, if i were a sveeeede, i’d be really p*ssed about where my tax crowns were going. and i thought supporting npr s*cked!

more from dennis.

update 11/09: well, the video with the english subtitles has been removed from youtube. you can watch the original here (only in sveeeedish).
