@olave – “I can’t help but look at that picture and think he looks said. That’s called “projection.”
i read serenity on his face, but yeah … i’m sure he (and all the other founding fathers) are rolling in their graves nowadays. =/
my question is: what do you call the metal thing hanging around his neck? it’s some sort of insignia, i’m guessing — but is there a specific word for it? anybody?
Looking back more recently, I’d say my favorite Presidents are Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, and Calvin Coolidge.
Looking back to the good stuff, I’d most like to roll Washington, Adams, and Jefferson into one big sandwich of good government, with all the Hamilton picked out of it.

Naww, it’s cloth, leather, and glass. It’s a gas mask. Washington was way ahead of time, made Franklin design him a defense against phosgene and chlorine gas. (Thanks to GW for identifying it, actually; I didn’t recognize.)

heh! (^_^)

How do you hug a nation and a culture on its deathbed?

it’s a last vestige of armour – mostly officers iirc

@HBD Chick
Who is your favorite president?
I think Theodore Roosevelt was kind of cool!
@Olave
I had the exact same thought a few months ago when I received my copy of Osprey Publishing’s book on Anglo-Saxon warriors. Take a look at the face of the man illustrated on the cover: http://www.amazon.com/Anglo-Saxon-Thegn-AD-449-1066-Warrior/dp/1855323494/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329946978&sr=8-1#_
Looks sad, doesn’t he? A thousand years after his death, endless hordes of strangers are trespassing on the lands he once fought for.

cool! thanks! i knew one of you guys would know. (^_^)
@crassus – “I think Theodore Roosevelt was kind of cool!”
heh. well, it’s hard not to love a man who gets shot and carries right on doing what he was doing. (~_^)
@crassus – “Who is your favorite president?”
that’s easy. thomas jefferson, hands down. i wish we’d had one hundred such men as presidents. i wish we had half such a man nowadays. =/
So we both have to go back at least a hundred years to find our favorite US president!
